Dr D.J. Hopkins: Guest Lecture

Scholars vs Superfans: Responding to the Challenges of Immersive Theater Research

In this talk, D.J. Hopkins reflects on over a decade of attending Sleep No More, Punchdrunk’s sprawling immersive dance theatre adaptation of Macbeth and the subject of his recent book. Hopkins will describe what it's like to be an audience member at Sleep No More, an active, embodied kind of spectatorship. He'll also discuss the ways in which immersive theatre presents unique challenges for scholarship, and he'll talk about new historiographic approaches, including digital research methodologies. Hopkins’s research offers rich descriptions of and images from an internationally famous immersive performance and will be of interest to theatre makers and scholars alike, as well as faculty from performance studies, dance, literary adaptation, and other fields.

Dr. D.J. Hopkins is a Professor at San Diego State University, where he is the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning. He is the immediate past Director of the SDSU School of Theatre, Television, and Film. Hopkins is a scholar whose research interests include Shakespeare in Performance (including adaptations for film, theatre, and VR) and an academic administrator who has held leadership positions on campus and in the field. His book Sleep No More and the Discourses of Shakespeare Performance (Jan. 2024) is available from Cambridge University Press  Hopkins’s book City / Stage / Globe: Performance and Space in Shakespeare’s London (2008) is published by Routledge. Hopkins is the co-editor of the collection of scholarly articles Performance and the Global City (Palgrave 2012, paperback 2015). This volume follows a previous collection of original scholarship, Performance and the City (Palgrave 2009). In 2016, these collections received the ATHE Award for Excellence in Editing. Hopkins’s scholarship has appeared in journals including TheatreForumTheatre JournalTheatre Topics, and Modern Drama, and in collections including Shakespeare After Mass MediaPerforming Transversally, and Rematerializing Shakespeare. As a dramaturg, Hopkins has worked with numerous directors, choreographers, and writers including Joe Chaiken, Naomi Iizuka, Tina Landau, Chuck Mee, Jose Rivera, Les Waters, Robert Woodruff, and Chay Yew. Hopkins is the 2012 recipient of the Elliott Hayes Award for Achievement in Dramaturgy. He served as editor of the peer-reviewed journal Theatre Topics and Vice President for Research and Publications for the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). Hopkins is an award-winning instructor; among his teaching recognitions at SDSU, Hopkins was awarded the Darlene Shiley Honors College Faculty Fellowship (2022–23)
