UC San Diego and La Jolla Playhouse have worked closely together to create an integrated environment for the nationally respected theatre training program offered by the Department of Theatre and Dance at UC San Diego and the exciting and nationally visible theatre produced by the Playhouse. The spirit of the relationship has always been one of symbiosis — the university brings the energy and idealism of its talented students, a world-class faculty, and the presence of an intellectual environment to support the extraordinary artists, innovative new works, and high production values at the cutting edge of contemporary theatre creation at the Playhouse.
As two legally and financially independent organizations, UC San Diego and La Jolla Playhouse have entered into a succession of formal agreements; their current agreement runs until 2050. Under this agreement, the two institutions work together by sharing facilities and training theatre artists. The facilities are on campus property, and many generous donors have made gifts to both institutions toward the construction of the facilities, as well as utilities and capital maintenance.
UC San Diego's Department of Theatre and Dance and La Jolla Playhouse share the use of four theaters: the Mandell Weiss Theatre, the Mandell Weiss Forum, the Theodore & Adele Shank Theatre, and the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. A special production calendar outlines the use of each theatre. There are also six rehearsal facilities on the campus, four of which are shared.
The Playhouse provides residencies for UC San Diego graduate students, and some undergraduate students take advantage of internships in various areas of the theatre. Playhouse artistic, administrative and production staff frequently teach in UC San Diego's graduate theatre programs and UC San Diego faculty have been engaged by the Playhouse as actors, directors, designers, stage managers, choreographers and voice and movement coaches.
