Biography

 

Dr. Rana Salimi received her Ph.D from UC, San Diego. Her specialty is in theatre and performance in the Middle East with focus on performativity of violence, the role of media, and the intersection of culture and politics through the lens of performance studies.  She is the recipient of Melon Dissertation Award for her thesis on “Political Performance of Violence: Palestinian Female Bombers and the Politics of Visual Representation” at UC San Diego.

Dr. Salimi has published “The female bomber’s body in performance” in New Theatre Quarterly, “Harem entertainers: Female performers in Qajar courts” (book chapter) in Theatre in the Middle East and “Performing Glimpses of the Past; The Political Implications of Dance in Nowruz Parades” (Book chapter) in Performing Iran: Cultural Identity and Theatrical Performance”. Her other articles have also appeared in Theatre Forum and Cornell University Press.
