About the Director

Will Jones is a fifth-year PhD student with an MA in Performance Studies from New York University as well as a BA in Theatre & English from Chapman University. Prior to studying at UCSD Will taught Theatre at a performing arts academy in the Austin, TX area. While enrolled at NYU Will read and evaluated scripts for The Public Theatre, Lark Play Development Center and held an Internship at The American Place Theatre. His areas of interest include the role of the spectator in realizing the drama, the creation of national identities (particularly in the American South) and the role of imagination in the process of theatre making.

Director's Statement

To me Much Ado is a play about the lies we tell each other. The little white lies we tell to help a friend, the lies we tell to get what we want, or the lies we tell ourselves to make life a little brighter. In the same way, one of the greatest gifts that theatre has to offer an audience is the ability to imagine the world differently through storytelling. And what is a story but a lie we agree to believe temporarily? This production interweaves the stories the characters tell in the play with the stories the actors tell on stage in order to embrace the idea that, the fact that its fiction doesn’t make it any less true.
