About the Playwright

On his way to make it big in New York, aspiring lyricist Fred Stevens meets Edna, a gal with a heart of gold. But the promise of success with a Tin Pan Alley down and out songwriter and his glamorous relative deters Fred from the woman who really loves him. Kaufman and Lardner’s classic comedy with music directed by Quinn Martin Fellow and UC San Diego MFA alum Jonathan Silverstein

George S. Kaufman was the most successful playwright in the American theater during Broadway's golden years between the two World Wars. His particular brand of sharp comedy and satire produced forty-five Broadway plays, the majority of which were successes; all but one of which were written in collaboration with other authors. He was also a talented and precise director of his own work and several other popular plays and musicals. Renowned as a humorist and wit, he was a charter member of the famed Algonquin Round Table. Kaufman worked with most of the major theatrical talents of his era and was the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for drama, including the first Pulitzer ever awarded to a musical.

Kaufman admired Ring Lardner's 1921 Saturday Evening Post short story called “Some Like It Cold,” of which the plot for June Moon is based. Lardner, one of America's most successful humorists and journalists and fellow Round Table member, was initially reluctant to participate in adapting another of his works for a Broadway show, having had several previous unpleasant experiences. Lardner was best known for his satirical wit in his sport journalism coverage, as well as in his short story writing. While he had a life- long fascination with the theater, June Moon was his only successful collaboration.

About the Director

Jonathan Silverstein most recently directed the acclaimed Off Broadway world premiere of The Temperamentals by Jon Marans, produced by Daryl Roth, Stacy Shane and Martian Entertainment (Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble). Other Off Broadway credits include revivals of A.R. Gurney's The Dining Room (Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Director; Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble), Robert Anderson's classics Tea and Sympathy and I Never Sang for My Father, and John Patrick's The Hasty Heart, all for the Keen Company, where he serves as Resident Director. Other NY credits include: Red Herring by Michael Albanese (New York International Fringe Festival; Outstanding Direction award), Blueprint by Bixby Elliot (Summer Play Festival), Cocteau’s Indiscretions (Phoenix Theatre Ensemble), The Dadshuttle (Drama League DirectorFest 2003), The Rats Are Getting Bigger (New York International Fringe Festival and The Public Theatre's New Works Now! festival), A Perfect Analysis Given by a Parrot (Phoenix Theatre Ensemble), Greater Messapia (Queens Theatre in the Park) and The Train Play (Clubbed Thumb).

Regional credits include: Rafta, Rafta... (Old Globe; West Coast premiere), The Fantasticks (Merrimack Repertory Theatre), Merton of the Movies and Marry Me a Little (Dorset Theatre Festival), The Triumph of Love (Cleveland Play House), Urinetown and Tick, Tick, BOOM! (Cape Rep Theatre), Much Ado About Nothing and Cymbeline (The Theatre at Monmouth) and Ionesco's The Chairs (San Diego’s Sledgehammer Theatre).

Jonathan has taught directing at C.W. Post College/LIU and acting at UC San Diego., where he served as coordinator of graduate Teaching Assistants and helped revitalize the Introduction to Acting syllabus. He has been a regular director with The Department of Dramatic Writing at N.Y.U. and has mentored student directors at Playwrights Horizons Theatre School. He has directed educationally at Yale University, The Cleveland Play House, MCC, Columbia University, C.W. Post, and UC San Diego. He currently teaches an ongoing scene study class (more information under 'Coaching'). Jonathan was featured as one of 2009’s Out 100, Out Magazine’s annual list of the most outstanding and inspiring men and women of the year.

Parking Passes Required: Monday through Friday. Weeknight passes are $2 per vehicle from the vending machines located in the UC San Diego Theatre District/La Jolla Playhouse parking lots and entry display case. Please remember your parking space number. You will need it to purchase your parking pass.

Note: Machines take all major credit cards except Discover and when paying with cash you must use exact change, NO CHANGE GIVEN.

Cars without permits are subject to ticketing by UCSD Campus Police. The Theatre & Dance Department does not have the authority to waive and cannot pay parking tickets.

Advance tickets for this production are available Monday-Friday, noon to 6 pm by calling the Box Office at 858.534.4574 or in person at the Theatre District’s Central Box Office at the Sheila & Hughes Potiker Theatre. 

At-the-Door tickets, if available, can be purchased one hour before show time at the performing theatre’s box office at Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre.
