The University of California San Diego’s Theatre and Dance Department seeks from all enrolled undergraduate students submissions of previously unproduced, unpublished scripts highlighting the African-American experience in contemporary or historical terms. Adaptations from books and other forms not allowed.

PRIZE

A $1000 honorarium will be awarded to the winning playwright.

A staged reading, April 24, 2010, of the winning script in the
MFA Baldwin New Play Festival attended by twelve national theatre professionals.

Travel and housing cost to and from UC San Diego to be present for the performance.

 

ADJUDICATION

Finalists and the eventual winners will be selected by a team comprised of the faculty and staff of UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance and invited judges from other theatre facilities, the professional theatre, local media or the UCSD student body.

The decision of the team of adjudicators is final.
The UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance reserves the right to select no winner.

 

GUIDELINES

Scripts must be 50 pages or longer. They must be original, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions. Plays which have staged readings are acceptable. Scripts may be submitted electronically or by regular mail.

Submitting Your Script Electronically

To submit a script electronically, click HERE and fill out the application in full.
Be sure to attach your script and a one-page document that contains a the following:

  • The name of your college or university
  • Your year of expected graduation
  • A summary of the story
  • All documents submitted electronically must be in PDF format amd must be less than 2 MB in size.

    Submitting Your Script By Regular Mail

    To submit a script via regular mail, your script must be typed and bound, and must be accompanied by an application form, which is contained in the brochure (available HERE), and a business-size, self-addressed stamped envelope. Also include a one-page summary of the story, the name of your college or university, and your year of expected graduation.

    Materials sent by regular mail should be sent to:

    Playwrights who want scripts returned must include a script-size, self addressed envelope with correct postage.
    Scripts without a return envelope and postage will be discarded at the conclusion of the contest.
    Please include one envelope for each script submitted. UC San Diego Theatre and Dance does not
    assume responsibility for loss, damage or return of scripts. All reasonable care will be taken.

    Scripts will be accepted beginning with a postmark of 9/30/09.
    Deadline for entry is a postmark entry of 2/26/10.
    The winner will be announced no later than 3/19/10.
