PATRICIA RINCON is a senior faculty member in the Department of Theatre and Dance, and Artistic Director of the Patricia Rincon Dance Collective (PRDC), a professional dance theater company since 1982. She has been an artist-in-residence each summer for the past 25 years at the University of Heidelberg Sports Institute, University of Frankfurt Main, University of Manheim and in Konstanz, Germany. She also has taught for many years at the Universities of Zurich, Bern and Lugano in Switzerland, and most recently with the IUNA Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte in Buenos Aries, Argentina. For the past eight years Ms. Rincon has been traveling to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where she has been building a contemporary dance community at the Bellas Artes Cultural Art Center there.
Her company (PRDC) has also been actively working, both independently and collaboratively, with other prolific artists and arts organizations like UC San Diego’s University Events Office (UEO) Dance Series program, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), both in La Jolla and downtown, The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (JCC), and Sushi Performance and Visual Arts. Internationally the company has performed at the “Tanz in Olten International Dance Festival” in Switzerland, the “Cuerpos Entransito International Dance Festival” at CECUT (the Centro Cultural Tijuana Performing Arts Center), as well as at Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico”. Her company has become well known for the Blurred Borders Dance Festival and the Myth Projects held annually in San Diego which features international, national and local artists.
She has received numerous grants from UC San Diego Research in the Arts, UC San Diego Center for Humanities, UCIRA and most recently a UC San Diego Latino Studies Research Initiative to develop her artistic work. She has also created a number of Dance on film and Documentary projects such as Project Contemporary Dance San Miguel de Allende, and The Walls Have Memories, which premiered in San Miguel de Allende and San Diego. Her latest dance on film project Waiting was just seen in the Buenos Aries, Argentina at the Dance on Film Festival in October 2008. Ms. Rincon has strong ties with the community of San Miguel who have been involved with many of her performances and video documentaries. In 1999 she was recipient of the California Center for the Arts Escondido "Arts Education Achievement Award” and North County Latino Association's “Latina of the Year” award for her work with Latino youth as well as the Tommy Award of Distinction for her years of service, leadership and vision in creating performance opportunities for choreographers and dancers both on a international and local level. She and her company continue to receive significant funding from a number of distinguished granting organizations, including The San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, John and Beverly Stauffer Foundation, The City of Encinitas Community Grant and the Mizel Family Foundation.
Ms. Rincon will also be working with the "UC San Diego Global Seminar Program in Dance and Choreography Summer 2009", where students will have the opportunity to study Dance (TDMV120) and Choreography (TDCH40) in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
