Biography

LES WATERS (BA Manchester University, England) is the former Head of the Graduate Directing Program at UCSD and is at present the Associate Artistic Director at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. He often works with prominent playwrights such as Caryl Churchill, Wallace Shawn and Charles Mee, and champions important new voices like Sarah Ruhl, Jordan Harrison and Anne Washburn.

His productions have been seen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Public Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, Connelly Theatre, Classic Stage Company, Steppenwolf, Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Yale Rep, Long Wharf Theatre and Humana Theatre Festival. In England he directed for the Bristol Old Vic, Hampstead Theatre Club, Joint Stock Theatre Group, Royal National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre and Traverse Theatre Club. He is an Associate Artist of The Civilians. Honors include an Edinburgh Fringe First, several awards from critic’s circles in San Diego, the Bay Area, Connecticut and Tokyo, and an Obie for BIG LOVE.
