Mandell Weiss Theatre

The Mandell Weiss Theatre (pictured above) is the largest of the theatre spaces in the Mandell Weiss Center for the Performing Arts. It is a a proscenium theatre that seats 500 audience members.

Technical Specifications of the Theatre

  • 61-foot grid. The front-of-house features a unique tension grid for flexible lighting.
  • A double-purchase, 49-line counterweight system serves the fly space.

The Weiss Theatre is also home to the technical shops that serve all five of our production spaces. The shops are supported by a 21-member professional technical team shared by the La Jolla Playhouse which is comprised of flexible and creative crafts people and artisans who articulate the designs and artistic vision of the design students in the program. Having this professional staff provides students with the artistic integrity and unique opportunity to work in virtually the same environment as that of the professional world. For more information about our skilled production staff, see our Technical Staff page.

The costume shop is a large airy area with natural light and ocean breezes coming from windows and skylights and features a dye room with vat and drying porch.

The scene shop has a large paint frame and an interior space which also has separate paint and prop shops. There is a spacious exterior work yard which provides additional room for large piecework or multiple-show construction.
