Undergradute Theatre & Dance

The UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance offers a major and minor in Theatre and a major and minor in Dance. In addition to providing an integrated program for students desiring a major or minor, the curriculum provides

  1. (1) a sequence of courses to fulfill the fine arts and/or humanities requirements for Muir College;
  2. (2) courses fulfilling Warren College program of concentration requirements;
  3. (3) courses to fulfill Revelle, Thurgood Marshall, and Eleanor Roosevelt's fine arts requirements; and
  4. (4) elective courses for the general student desiring experiences in theatre.

The department also stages three theatrical productions per year featuring the work of undergraduate actors, designers, and stage managers. The department also produces two dance concerts yearly, one of which showcases student choreographers. In addition, undergraduates have the opportunity to audition for graduate shows, including those directed by prestigious guest artists. Two cabaret spaces are also available almost every weekend during the school year for students to conceive and stage their own work. Theatre majors get a free ticket to every department show.

The liberal arts curriculum of the Department of Theatre & Dance is based on the belief that a good undergraduate education in theatre should provide the student with a solid background in dramatic literature and the aesthetics and history of theatrical performance as well as exposure to the different artistic components of theatrical art -- performance, playwriting, and design. Finally, such an education should incorporate participation in the production process itself.

Students interested in pursuing a Theatre or Dance major at UCSD must submit an art portfolio in addition to your UCSD application. The Theatre and Dance faculty will review your art portfolio and share their evaluations with the UCSD Admissionsí Committee. Your art portfolio is part of your overall application review.

The 2015/2016 art portfolio requirements will be posted October 20th on this page.

Please note the art portfolio is only required for new students entering UCSD. Current UCSD students do not have to submit an art portfolio, you can change your major to Theatre or Dance through TritonLink.
