Graduate Admissions:
General Information
Hello, and thank you for your
interest in our graduate programs in Theatre. We have moved to a largely
on-line application process to match the University of California's own
shift to internet admissions.
Now
don't panic. The online application process is easier than
you think. There are three easy steps to follow below. The one catch is
that you have to have an e-mail address to apply to the University online.
If you don't have one, it is very easy to get a free e-mail at either hotmail.com or yahoo.com,
both are good.
All applications and all supporting documentation for applications to admission in the fall of 2009 must be received by January 7, 2009.
- Playwrights are expected to be completed by December 5, 2008
- Directors are expected to complete their application files by December 31, 2008
- PhD applicants by December 12, 2008
- Dance Theatre applicants by December 15, 2008
- Actors please note that auditions are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Actors, Dancers and Directors will be notified of their audition or interview location, date, and time.
- In the areas of Design, Playwriting, and Stage Management, after a complete review of your file, a personal interview at UCSD or a telephone interview may be scheduled.
If at any time you have questions about the application process or the materials you should submit, please contact our Graduate Coordinator, Lee Montaño, by e-mail at lmontano@ucsd.edu or by phone at (858) 534-1046

Entrance Requirements
Applicants must have or must be about to receive a Bachelor's Degree (not necessarily in theatre) prior to applying for graduate admission. A 3.0 or better grade point average in the last two years of undergraduate or post-baccalaureate work is required. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required for PhD and playwriting programs only. Please note that due to the nature of our program, students may enter only in the fall quarter and we do not accept transfer credits from other programs.
Financial Aid
Financial assistance is detailed in the Application for Graduate Admissions. Be sure to check the Financial Assistance Requested box indicating that you intend to apply for need-based financial aid and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1, 2008. (Foreign students are not eligible for need-based financial assistance.)
It is important to be aware that there is no financial aid for out-of-state tuition. Estimated 2008-2009 tuition and fees are itemized in the Application for Graduate Admission booklet. There are Need-based grants, Work-Study, Loans (Federal Perkins and Stafford) and Non-need-based loans (Federal SLS, Unsubsidized Stafford). To apply for any of these, you should file the FAFSA by March 1, 2008.
PLEASE NOTE: since it is possible that you will not receive notification of an award until close to the starting date of the fall quarter, you should make every effort to provide for contingency funds in the event your request for aid cannot be fulfilled.
You are encouraged to seek public and private sources of scholarships and grants through your undergraduate school's financial aid office. You should also visit your local public library to obtain other private sector sources of scholarships, grants, and student loans. You should investigate and apply as soon as possible due to early application deadlines.

Scholarships/Fellowships
A limited number of scholarships and fellowships are available to entering graduate students through the Office of Graduate Studies and Research and are described in the Application for Graduate Admission booklet. The Department of Theatre and Dance will nominate students for departmental scholarships as warranted.
Selection Process
At the conclusion of the audition tour, there will be a final selection process. We will then immediately notify those actors we wish to admit into the Acting program. The same process will be implemented following interviews with directing applicants. For all other areas, students selected for admission will be immediately notified after a complete review of the file and all submitted documents and after a personal or telephone interview. We will also notify you of financial awards for which we plan to nominate you.
Entrance into the program is highly selective. From approximately 500 applicants, we select 20-29 students. The breakdown is usually as follows: 8-10 actors, 1-2 dancers, 1-2 directors, 4-6 designers, 1-2 playwrights, 2-3 stage managers. Students who are not selected for admission should be notified by mail by April 15.
